Dawid Trzensimiech - Polish National Ballet

Dawid was born in Tarnowskie Góry, Poland. He began his training at Ludomir Różycki State Ballet School in Bytom and then joined The Royal Ballet School, London in 2006. Upon graduation he joined The Royal Ballet and was promoted to First Artist and to Soloist. In 2014 he joined the Romanian National Opera, Bucharest as First Soloist under the direction of Johan Cobborg. In 2016, Dawid moved back to Poland to join the Polish National Ballet at their highest rank (First Soloist).

How did you start dancing and why? 

When I was 7 years old I I used to go to privet piano lessons once a week. Beginners ballet classes for children were also held in the same building. My mum took me to the ballet studio even though neither of us had ever seen or knew anything about ballet. The teacher saw something in me and insisted that I audition for the National Ballet School in Bytom when I turned 9 years old. 

Most memorable moment of your career? 

My debut as Lensky in Cranko's 'Onegin'. I have been passionate about this role ever since I saw this ballet but I will always remember this performance as I felt my body, mind and music have become one. My muscles knew what they were supposed to do and I was able to truly enjoy every moment.  

Who is your role model and why? 

Last summer I was fortunate to dance with Alina Cojocaru and I don't think I have ever seen a more hard-working person in my life. Her attention to detail and artistry left me inspired for months. She will always be a person for me to look up to.

Do you have a specific way of warming up for a performance or to get focused for a main role? 

After the morning class I walk back home and cook some pasta for lunch and I like to watch a few episodes of my favourite TV series to help me relax. I usually go for a nap and have a shower before I go back to work. I do my make-up and warm up barre while listening to calming music, then I make my way to the stage around 45 minutes before curtain up in my practice clothes to try my steps and check if all of the props are in the right place. Then I don't return to stage till 5 minutes before the show begins. 

Which is your favourite theatre in the world to dance in? 

Bunka Kaikan in Tokyo. You can really feel the passion and appreciation coming from the Japanese audience for what we do. This is the reason it's one of my favourite places to perform.  

How has ballet made you the person you are today? 

Ballet has definitely made a huge impact on the person I am. It has helped me gain confidence in interacting with others as I used be very shy and uncomfortable while meeting new people but also, it has made me stubborn and overly critical of myself.  

 Do you have any hidden talents?  

I'm an open book but I recently discovered that I'm a decent cook. 

What is your favourite ballet trick/step? 

Probably a Grand Jeté. When I do it well it feels like I'm flying.

Any advice for young aspiring ballet dancers? 

"Work hard, do the best you can, don't ever lose faith in yourself and take no notice of what other people say about you" Noël Coward. 

 What's your escape from the ballet world?

Going to the cinema and having friends over for dinner always helps to give my body and brain an escape from ballet.  

What has been the hardest and most challenging role you have performed? 

 There have been a few but the top three are definitely Colas in Sir Fredric Ashton's "La Fille Mal Gardée", Siegfried in Gheorghe Iancu's production of Swan Lake and Albrecht in "Giselle".
